Review of the Show:
The sun had just set and the rock quarry where Firstbank Amphitheater sits was illuminated only by the house lights. But as soon as those dimmed, the electric tension of anticipation floated through the cool air and the murmurs from the crowd were soon silenced.
Then the band walked on stage and the audience erupted in a roar of delight. The words “When time makes this a memory-” came to life as they wrote themselves on the screen. They soon faded, only to be followed by “-these songs will be what’s left of me. But for one night in Tennessee, I need to hear you sing to me.”
Dermot Kennedy headlined a show in Franklin, Tennessee at Firstbank Amphitheater this past week & if you didn’t go, you missed a show of a lifetime. His band took the stage, silhouetted by the opening message that played on the screen. Kennedy himself made his way onto the ramp situated in the middle of the stage soon after the last group words faded away.
Kennedy opened the show with his heartfelt ballad “Blossom”. He brought an energy to the stage that had the whole crowd moving. Even as my attention was mainly focused on Kennedy, it was clear that behind me, the audience was dancing and singing along to every word.
The visual component throughout the entire show was absolutely breathtaking. The use of lights to provide various spotlights and back lights to emphasize and silhouette Kennedy was stunning. The various architectural and natural visuals of buildings, birds, and Kennedy’s handwriting added an element that provided a story without drawing attention away from the artist. The visuals provided that extra detail that only added to the entrancing performance Kennedy put on.
Dermot Kennedy put on a show for the ages. The combination of his stage presence and overall, vulnerable, storytelling vibe of his shows is unforgettable.
