Review of the Show:
Last night, Free Range took the stage for what would be their final opening performance for the renowned indie band: The Backseat Lovers. But don’t let that take away from the amazing show they put on.
Free Range is known for their softer sound. Unlike your typical indie band, they’re not “all-up-in-your-face” or desperately trying to captivate the audience. Their music does that for them. Every song is a perfect balance. Nothing overpowers the other. Anyone listening wouldn’t be overstimulated by the various sounds produced.
But it’s not just the music production that’s in sync. You can tell from the crowd that the band is in tune (pun not intended) with each other. There’s a silent understanding and conversation going on through their performance that’s evident even from the nosebleeds. Ryman Auditorium is a large venue, but it’s intimate enough that from wherever you placed, it felt personal and private. Jensen’s adds to the nostalgic ambience with their soothing vocals.
While their setlist is comprised of mostly slower tunes, there were moments where the energy picked up and the crowd all raised to stand on their feet and clap along to the beat of “Want To Know”, “Growing Away” and their final song, a cover, in which Joshua Harmon, lead singer of The Backseat Lovers, joined them on stage.
As the opening act came to a close and drummer Jack Henry busted an insane amount of drum solos that caused the audience to erupt in applause, you could sense the energy coarse through your veins. The whole auditorium was captivated, the atmosphere electric.
