Review of the Show:
Capaldi said it best himself: “I have a lot of songs for people not in relationships.” Then, before launching into the third song of his set, “Lost on You”, he said, “So, if you’re in a relationship, here’s a song for when you inevitably break up.”
The entire crowd laughed. Then sang along to one of the most heartbreaking songs in Capaldi’s entire discography.
Lewis Capaldi is known for his descriptive songwriting and his emotional lyrics. He’s also known for his sense of humor and his friendship with Niall Horan, both of which were on display when a fan threw a hat saying “Niall is daddy” on stage and Capaldi kept it.
The balance between melancholic, descriptive songs that detail the suffering of losing someone you love and the lighthearted jokes was perfect. You could be crying from the lyrics one second and laughing at Capaldi claiming that his aunt could be in heaven or in hell the next (“I don’t know what way she went,” he said while pointing up and down). The entire audience connected over his vivid, expressive lyrics and his commentary on where in Utah we actually were. They connected through the somber situations in the songs and the bit that Capaldi wasn’t actually playing the piano.
The energy in the room was one of connection. Of understanding. Of people gathering just to be together. It felt like being surrounded by all of your best friends. Capaldi has a way of bringing people together. If you’re looking to be accepted by a group of people, you don’t need to look any further than your nearest Lewis Capaldi show.
