“For a band that doesn’t perform with any microphones, Hemwick has a lot to say. At their performance at The Beehive, Salt Lake City on March 3rd, Hemwick previewed an upcoming album to follow up their EP Junkie. There’s an ironic sense of vulnerability that comes along with eschewing vocals- rather than use lyrics to dictate meaning to their songs, they choose instead to direct all our attention to the instrumentation, and dramatically juxtapose different moods within a single song to lend insight.
Their new material shows how capable Hemwick is at taking the audience through movements of opposites- punctuating precise yet manic breakdowns with lucid and introspective guitar solos. Hearing them put it all together was an almost meditative experience, though some may get whiplash from how quickly these changes happen. Altogether, Hemwick’s unconventional combination of the psychedelic and metal genres actually works.”
